Situated
15 km south of the City of Williams Lake, 150 Mile House was a very important
stop along the Cariboo Wagon Road beginning at Mile ’0’ in Lillooet. This route
was traveled profusely during the Cariboo Gold Rush in the mid 1860’s and
thousands of miners on their way to the gold fields of Barkerville required
rest and supplies on the long and arduous journey north. 150 Mile House was one
of the major roadhouse stops on this rugged trek and was once a prolific ranch,
which provided fresh produce and hay for other communities on the Old Wagon
Road. The community also provided postal and telegraph services, had a general
store and its own police station and schoolhouse.
Today,
150 Mile House is a thriving residential community with much to offer the modern
traveler in the way of amenities with a hotel, restaurant, specialty shopping,
a gas station, post office, full-service garage, pub, store and liquor
store.There is an authentic 1890’s
schoolhouse museum located right off the highway on the present day elementary
school property, and a tea house with lovely decorative stone garden creations
to peruse while enjoying a relaxing lunch.
There is a rich history of ranching in 150 Mile
House and the surrounding areas with some fascinating historical sites and
points of interest for you to discover and explore. Get your fishing license
here and head out to one of the hundreds of great fishing lakes nearby. 150
Mile House is also a useful stop before turning off at the junction on your way
to the communities of Big
Lake, Horsefly and
Likely. Historic Quesnelle Forks, Horsefly
Lake, Keithley Creek and
world-renowned Quesnel Lake are all on this ‘backroad to Barkerville’ and
provide some of the best fishing, scenery, outdoor recreation and wildlife
viewing opportunities in the Central Cariboo.
Just minutes away from all this and more, 150 Mile House is a lovely and
interesting place to visit, right in the heart of Cariboo country
